Program Summary
Disaster Profile
In March 2010, Rhode Island had more than 15 inches of rain followed by severe flooding throughout the state. After the storms and subsequent flooding, many RI residents requested volunteer recovery assistance. In response, we launched the Rhode Island Recovery Coordination Center (RI RCC) to assist in the coordination of volunteer recovery efforts.
Our Work
Although not engaged in a full-scale volunteer project, we offered our expertise in various areas. This meant managing requests from the community and matching them with volunteer teams from other responding organizations. On April 5, 2010, Rhode Island Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (RI VOAD) and Rhode Island Emergency Management (RI EM) asked us to coordinate the work requests for the state. We began by organizing an information exchange between responding agencies. The RI RCC functioned as a central hub for inter-agency coordination—successfully connecting flood affected residents with relief organizations.
