Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha'apai Volcano

On Saturday, January 15, the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai volcano erupted causing massive damage prompting multiple tsunami warnings for the surrounding areas. The full extent of the damage is uncertain, but there has been no request for international humanitarian assistance.

January 21, 2022 - 15:33 (EST) - Update 2

Now almost one week after the eruption, the extent of the damage is still being assessed. Information on the outlying islands has been slow to come out due to a communication connection being severed. There is concern that international aid will introduce COVID-19 into the otherwise COVID free country. Australia and New Zealand are providing aid, but all other international assistance is restricted. All Hands and Hearts continues to monitor the situation and stand by to assisted if required.

January 18, 2022 - 11:20 (EST) - Update 1

On January 15, the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai volcano erupted causing multiple tsunamis in the surrounding areas. Internet and phone communications are currently badly affected resulting in many unconfirmed reports. Australia and New Zealand have sent response teams and the UN is standing ready if needed. There has been no request for international humanitarian assistance from Tonga at this time though the situation might change as communications are restored. The Tongan border remains closed to all travelers due to COVID-19 restrictions.
