Mucking and Gutting

Mucking and gutting is a crucial step in ensuring the structure is adequately prepared for the repair/rebuild process.

Mucking is the removal of mud, muck, silt and other typically semi-solid material from a home, caused by water inundation. Gutting is the removal of damaged construction-related materials, including drywall, insulation, floorboards, panelling and cabinets. Mucking and gutting cleans and clears the inside of the structure in preparation for reconstruction, ensuring removal of personal items, appliances, fixtures and any other items that were damaged or destroyed by the disaster is complete. A critical element of this work type is salvaging undamaged possessions and placing them in a safe location for owners to access at a later date.

Prior to starting a muck and gut, staff will perform a walk-through of the structure to establish structural integrity, turn off utilities, identify the scope of work our team will undertake, designate a location for salvaged goods to be placed and ensure any unsafe items are removed from the structure before the muck and gut begins.

Once the walk-through is complete and the full team has been briefed on safety and the action plan to complete the work, volunteers and staff will commence work under the guidance of team leaders and site supervisors. Mucking and gutting is often followed by mold sanitation to ensure the structure is free of mold and safe to be occupied.

Health and Safety
All Hands and Hearts make the safety of the people we work for, and that work with us, a priority. We employ a risk-based approach to health and safety, which studies the possible dangers of a workplace and seeks to minimize those dangers through controls, such as usage guidelines, training, supervision and the enforcement of appropriate protective equipment. Each of our worksites have specific operational standards and risk controls to reduce the likelihood of a hazard occurring and contingency plans to reduce the severity of a hazard if it does occur.

It’s volunteers like you who shine a bright light on communities affected by natural disaster.
