Hurricane Beryl Relief

July 2024 – August 2024
Last updated: July 2024

All Hands and Hearts’ (AHAH) Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) has mobilized across the Caribbean in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl, the earliest Category 5 Atlantic hurricane. Our team is on the ground in Grenada and a second team is moving into Texas, providing essential support to affected communities and connecting with partners to have the greatest impact.

Our Work

Less than a week after Hurricane Beryl ravaged islands in the southeastern Caribbean, AHAH’s DART was on the ground. Currently stationed on the island of Carriacou, our team is providing immediate support to Grenadians by distributing food and essential supplies. After assessing the needs of affected islands across the region, AHAH opened a response program in Carriacou to aid survivors with debris removal. We also deployed a team to Texas, where we identified the needs of impacted communities to provide fast, efficient relief.

Our Work

In July, the AHAH response team in Carriacou completed debris removal at 14 sites. As our purple shirts gained recognition, the community helped us identify those in need, especially elderly neighbors and families. Volunteers also assisted Samaritan’s Purse by unloading containers, cutting tarpaulin and packing kits, and supported World Central Kitchen in serving nearly 80,000 meals. Additionally, we joined NaDMA’s street cleanup initiative, clearing debris alongside hundreds of other volunteers.

In Wharton, Texas, we’ve completed 19 sites, including 18 chainsaw sites to clear trees and branches. We also gutted a home for a single mother of three to prevent mold growth after Hurricane Beryl.

Disaster Profile

Hurricane Beryl, the earliest recorded Category 5 storm to form in the Atlantic, made landfall in Grenada on July 1, first setting the record as the earliest Category 4 hurricane. The widespread destruction throughout the Caribbean has displaced thousands of people, impacting their livelihoods, food security and health. Smaller islands in Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, such as Union and Carriacou, have been particularly devastated, with 98% of homes and buildings destroyed. After inflicting heavy damage in Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and Mexico, Beryl slammed into Texas as a Category 1 hurricane on July 8, bringing deadly winds, storm surges and flooding. One week on, hundreds of thousands of Texans are still without power.
