The Rising Threat of Hurricane Season
Here’s How We Can Be Ready
June 1, 2025
All Hands and Hearts reflects on 20 years of hurricane response, the rising need for disaster relief and how monthly donors make a life-changing difference.
Each year, hurricane season becomes more intense, more unpredictable and more dangerous. Communities around the world are preparing for longer seasons, stronger storms and slower recovery times. And as climate change accelerates, so does the need for fast, effective disaster relief.
At All Hands and Hearts (AHAH), we’ve spent two decades showing up right after the storm—and staying long after the headlines fade. With the 2025 hurricane season underway, one thing is clear: the need for trusted, prepared responders has never been greater.
The Data Doesn’t Lie: Hurricanes Are Hitting Harder
Over the last 20 years, the frequency and strength of hurricanes have increased significantly. According to NOAA, the average number of named storms per season has grown from 12 to 15, and Category 4 and 5 hurricanes have nearly doubled in frequency since the 1980s.
What’s more alarming? These storms are moving more slowly, dumping more rain, and leaving communities underwater for longer. In 2020, we witnessed the most active Atlantic hurricane season in recorded history—with 30 named storms. That trend isn’t slowing down.
The result: deeper destruction, longer recoveries and an urgent need for organizations that are ready to act.

Trusted For 20 Years Of Hurricane Response
Since 2005, AHAH has responded to some of the most devastating hurricanes in recent history. Our teams are often among the first to arrive and the last to leave—focused on listening to communities, partnering with local leaders and building long-term resilience.
Some of our most impactful hurricane responses include:

Hurricanes Ian and Idalia (2022–2023)
Our Rapid Response teams were on the ground in Florida within days, providing muck and gut services, tarping and debris removal—often in communities that hadn’t received any other aid.
Hurricane Katrina (2005)
Our first-ever hurricane response. Volunteers helped gut and rebuild homes in Louisiana, sparking a commitment to long-term recovery that’s been central to our model ever since.
Hurricane Harvey (2017)
One of the costliest storms in U.S. history. In Texas, our teams cleaned out flooded homes, removed debris and helped hundreds of families begin to rebuild their lives.
Hurricane Maria (2017)
In Puerto Rico, we supported over 100 schools and homes following one of the most devastating storms the island has ever seen. Our work continued for nearly three years, delivering essential services, rebuilding infrastructure and supporting educational access.
To date, AHAH has mobilized over 68,400 volunteers across nearly 30 countries, reaching more than 1.5 million people affected by disasters.

Preparedness Matters—and Monthly Giving Makes It Possible
When a hurricane hits, every hour counts. Responding quickly and effectively is only possible when we’ve already laid the groundwork with tools pre-positioned, teams trained and logistics in place. That’s where our monthly donors come in.
Monthly giving provides consistent, reliable funding that allows us to:
- Prepare for disasters before they happen
- Respond within hours or days of impact
- Stay for the long haul, rebuilding schools, homes and infrastructure
- Serve under-resourced communities that are often left behind
It’s not just about reacting to disasters—it’s about being ready for them.
